On Deck

Saltwater is a memoir about the year I turned 42 and, with zero sailing experience, decided to sail around the world. I joined a crew of strangers from 16 countries and boarded a massive ship that looked like something straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean. From the outside, it must’ve looked like I joined on a whim. But seven years after leaving a stifling, celibate life as a devout (but unmarried) member of the Mormon church, I still hadn’t figured out how to live inside my body. I was done wasting time, and I knew what I needed: A force outside myself, one as strong as an ocean, to push me into the daring, adventurous life I’d always dreamed of living.
